I think Pimp C may have gotten a lil carried away, and I’ll admit it was funny as hell, but the truth of the matter is that Hip Hop is not what it used to be and it’s not just the South’s fault. You can listen to rappers from the East and West and their lyrics hold the same amount of substance as “Lean Wit It Rock Wit It” or “Walk it Out”. You got people like Jim Jones talking about absolutely NOTHING and throwing fake basketball shots in the air. I like Fat Joe, but what’s his point in Make it Rain or Lean Back? And where is Nelly? Is he still sliding credit cards in girl’s asses? If people are going to be mad, be mad at what Hip Hop has become as a whole. Nowadays, most rappers have one thing in mind and that’s quantity not QUALITY. I will admit, I am from the south (Houston) – I will snap with the rest of them from the A, bob my head to Mike Jones or Paul Wall’s newest hit, BUT I also will jam Talib Kweli’s latest CD in my car.
In this game you have artists and entertainers. Right about now, more rappers are falling into the category of entertainers. True artists are successful not because of their record sales, but b/c of how much substance their records hold. Anybody can make a record like Walk it Out and have the club jumping, but will they have the longevity? Probably not. So like Pimp C said, at the end of a true hip hop record, people ought to be able to grasp what the artist was relaying thru his message…not the latest dance.
