Autopsy Of A Verse : Killah Priest

As one of the more visible members in the revolving cast of Wu-satellite emcees, Brooklyn’s Killah Priest has always been a sort of acquired taste among dilettantes, inspiring wild enthusiasm or yawn-inducing boredom, depending on who you ask. I’ve always felt that the man never received his due; as the story goes, Priest would have usurped Masta Killa’s place in the Clan had he not fallen asleep in the studio during the recording “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’.” I’d certainly rather hear him than Cappadonna or even U-God any time of day, but Priest’s Achilles’ heel has always been his inability to assert his presence on a given track. Surrounded by the contrasting technicolor personalities of the other Clan members, Killah Priest’s low-key demeanor inevitably fell by the shadows. Yet in the history of hip hop, few have wholly embodied the expression “droppin’ science” as he has; pay close attention to his lyrics and it doesn’t take long to recognize the man’s brilliance. (More …)

Although I agree with all of what you said, on the strength of Heavy Mental alone, Priest is my fav MC. I owe it my brother, and when you say he can bore you to death, to me those are the times when he tries to cater to the commercial world. The greatest thing Pries brought to the game is that most of what he says goes right over bruthas head and yet he still is popular. You cant tell me that these little white boy Hip Hop dudes can understand BIBLE. I’m a Hebrew Israelite, as he is, and it took me a minute to decipher it. He needs to not give in to the traps of (Hell) the current state of Hip Hop and continue to be strong enough to stand alone. I dont even consider him a WU affiliate, hes Killah Priest. Heavy Mental to me is one of the best “Albums” ever made because of its continuity, and melodic tracks. He needs to return to that form, as much as Nas needs to return to Illmatic, and OC needs to return to WordLife. Shalam’

Man when I first heard him on that liquid swords, I was at a loss for words. Dude is truly underrated.

No disrespect to Nas and Canibus (incredible lyricists, indeed), but Priest is the most prolific, lyrically dense, and important M.C. since Rakim. Truth be told, there’s actually no need to explain my position; anyone who’s listened to his material, from Heavy Mental to The Offering, understands clearly what I mean. Nonetheless, he’s still severely underated and underappreciated!(EZEKIEL 2:5-7). SHALAWAM BAHA SHAM YAHAWAH!!!!
