Talib Kweli comes in this week in the number 2 spot with selling 60,000 copies in it’s first week. This is Talib’s first solo album to crack open the top ten. His album “Ear Drum” features UGK and Norah Jones among others. With Common coming in at number 1 his first week a couple of weeks ago, it looks as though hip-hop is headed in the right direction.

This week I’ve heard two new rumors on Damon Dash. The first was that the IRS was after him for 5 million, and Dame had to ask Jay-Z for it to escape jail time. The second rumor is that Dame has been up at Def Jam looking for office space. BET’s Black Carpet speculate that he will be taking over for Jay-Z or maybe he’s just starting a new label. A lawsuit brought against rapper Ja Rule over an unpaid construction bill has been dropped by the contractor who originally brought the matter to court. According to The Bergen Record, contractor Joel Tobia told Superior Court Judge Roy F. McGeady that since the story hit the media, several people he knew had warned him about moving forward with the case. Tobia claims that Ja, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, still owes him $8,000 for extensive work he performed on the rapper’s $3.5 million mansion. “I feel extremely uncomfortable going forward with this case,” Tobia told Judge McGeady. “People are asking me, ‘Do you know what you are doing?’ I have two children. I am concerned. I hope you are reading between the lines.” The judge replied that it was not his job to read between the lines and dismissed the case. Tobia, who has already won a default judgment against Ja for the unpaid money in civil court, was trying to have criminal charges brought against the rapper. Continue reading
8/14/2007 New York, NY- Foxy Brown leaves Def Jam to start an independent label which will be distributed through Koch Records. Last Wednesday night, August 8, Foxy Brown closed a deal with Koch Records which makes her the first female star MC to have an independent label at Koch. Although the exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, label sources revealed it was a multi-million dollar negotiation that signed after office hours.
